Mother of Pearl Poppy

$4.50

I first read about these in a Thompson & Morgan catalog about 40 years ago. While the flowers looked amazing - what captured my imagination is the story of Sir Cedric Morris growing these in a secluded corner of his ancient home, carefully selecting seeds over the years until he arrived at this exquisite mix.

I ordered them straight away. Please note, that back then I didn’t just click a button. I wrote out my order, prayed over it, hailed Mary and mailed it off to merry olde England. Many, many weeks later I received my precious packet of seeds. I planted them. They grew! And uh m’gaw, what an array! A mass of delicate poppies in the softest shades and colors of some enchanted morning. The collection of colors have since broken down, with more pale oranges than I’d prefer, but they are still worthy of growing and maybe someday I will work on restoring the original blend.

Mother of Pearl AKA “Cedric Morris,” was named after the late accomplished painter, plant breeder and gardening enthusiast. Like many of his sumptuous paintings, these beauties were selected by him for their muted, smokey tones, their distinction being their subtlety. Pearly whites, roses, smoky greys, lavenders, and speckled petals, many with picoteed edges, and the most incredible colors of pollen we have ever seen. Loved by pollinators and people alike. 2-2.5' tall.
